Breast Reduction

Who is a candidate for breast reduction surgery?

Women with large, heavy, pendulous breasts are candidates for breast reduction surgery. This is most especially true if they experience any of these symptoms on a regular basis:

  • Back pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Restriction of physical activity
  • Skin irritation
  • Feelings of extreme self-consciousness

One outcome of breast reduction surgery is that you may find physical activities to be easier. Another outcome of this type of plastic surgery is that you may feel less self-conscious and more confident. Finally, you may reduce or eliminate pain associated with your breasts, including in your back, shoulders, and chest area.

How is the breast reduction surgery performed? What are the risks?

The breast reduction surgery procedure is performed at a fully licensed and accredited outpatient plastic surgery center. The procedure takes approximately 2 to 3 hours to perform. A breast reduction includes performing a lift at the same time. Some reductions are covered by insurance. Most patients take a week off of work to recover. They take off longer if the work requirements are strenuous. A consultation with Dr. Yang at our Maryland or Virginia locations will help answer any questions you may have about breast reduction cosmetic surgery. The most common technique is demonstrated in the images here. Scars are usually well hidden from view by regular clothing.
