Silicone Breast Augmentation

What is silicone breast augmentation?

In this procedure, silicone is used to enlarge breast size. Silicone is thick and sticky, and it closely resembles the feel of natural breasts. The procedure for silicone breast implants is to surgically insert a shell that is pre-filled with silicone gel. This surgical “boob job” procedure can only be performed by a certified plastic surgeon.

Who is a candidate for silicone breast augmentation?

Healthy women who are at least 22 years of age, with small breasts, are candidates for silicone breast augmentation.

Patients with breast size differences can have this corrected through different implant volumes. Also, silicone breast implants do not prevent breast sagging. If there is loose skin, a lift may be indicated as well. Which is better, silicone breast augmentation or saline breast augmentation?

Silicone has the advantage over saline for a more natural feel and less visible rippling. The cost for silicone breast augmentation is higher, however. Dr. Yang, plastic surgeon, is available to help you decide which option may be right for you.

How is the cosmetic plastic surgery performed? What are the risks?

The procedure is performed in a fully licensed outpatient cosmetic surgery center. General anesthesia is used. A silicone gel-filled implant is placed behind the pectoralis muscle. The incision is placed in the breast fold.

The procedure typically takes under an hour. Most patients require a week off of work to recover. They may need to take off more time if the work is strenuous. Scars are usually well hidden from view by regular clothing.
